New Discoveries

Reversing Aging with Hyperbaric Chambers? *Here’s* How Soft and Hard Shell Systems Go Head-to-Head in the Race to Turn Back Time ⏳

If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I’m a huge fan of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for recovery, brain performance, and longevity. 

My friend Dr. Jason Sonners, one of the most knowledgeable guys I know in the HBOT space, recently shared some fascinating research comparing soft shell (1.3 ATA) and hard shell (2.0 ATA) chambers, and the results are worth paying attention to.

Ben Greenfield HBOTAccording to Jason's research (you can discover more about that here), both types of HBOT helped lower inflammation by modulating cytokines, but in different ways. 

Soft-shell chambers had a stronger effect on TNF-α and IL-6—key drivers of autoimmune conditions and chronic inflammation—while hard-shell chambers were more effective at targeting myeloperoxidase, which may make them better suited for heart-related inflammation or post-viral recovery (like long COVID).

What’s even cooler is that participants using either pressure saw notable cognitive improvements, especially in memory recall, though the higher-pressure group gained a slight edge. 

Both pressure levels helped turn back the clock on biological aging, but through different mechanisms.

The mild chamber seemed to rejuvenate early DNA aging markers faster, while the higher-pressure setup worked more deeply on the second-generation “clocks” linked to disease prevention and longevity, just taking a little longer to show results.

Personally, for the best results, I like to stack my HBOT sessions with intermittent fasting, nitric oxide boosters, or methylene blue to amplify oxygen utilization. Just avoid high-dose antioxidants (like glutathione) right before your session since they can blunt the beneficial hormetic response.
