Think Calcium & Vitamin D Are Enough for Strong Bones? Science Says *This* Matters Even More

When it comes to bone health, most people think the answer lies in supplements. Load up on vitamin D, omega-3s, and calcium—and hope that’s enough, right?

“Treatment effects on the incidence rate of total vertebral fractures (VFs) over the 3-year follow-up. Analyses adjusted for age, linear spline at age 85 years, sex, prior fall, BMI, and study site. But a massive new clinical trial shows otherwise. In a three-year study of nearly 1,500 older adults across Europe, daily vitamin D (2,000 IU) and omega-3 fatty acids (1 gram) had no effect on reducing vertebral fractures. 

What moved the needle? A simple, at-home exercise routine done just three times a week. 

I'm not talking Olympic lifting here; basic moves like sit-to-stand transitions, single-leg balances, stair stepping, and resistance-band pulls significantly reduced fractures in women and slowed the progression of existing vertebral collapse. 

The findings are clear: your bones crave stress and strain to stay strong and resilient.

But there’s another layer to it: your diet also plays a major role in bone density.

A meta-analysis of 20 studies following over 243,000 people found that plant-based eaters, particularly vegans or those who’d been strictly plant-based for more than a decade, had a much higher risk of spinal osteoporosis compared to omnivores. 

The elevated risk was most pronounced at the lumbar spine, where fractures are already most common, likely because many plant-based diets fall short in key bone-building nutrients like bioavailable protein, vitamin K2, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and collagen peptides (all of which are abundantly found in animal foods).

Based on these findings, here are some key takeaways and action steps:

  • Supplements alone won’t cut it. Bones need mechanical loading, and even simple balance and strength moves done at home outperform vitamin D or omega-3s for fracture prevention.
  • Plant-based diets can leave bones vulnerable if not carefully planned. If you do go vegan or vegetarian, pay special attention to nutrient density and consider smart supplementation.
  • Bones stay strongest with both training and nutrition. If you want maximum protection, pair resistance exercise (heavy lifting and balance work) with a nutrient-dense diet rich in protein, minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins.

Overall, supplements can help at the margins, but exercise and proper nutrition remain the bedrock of skeletal longevity.

This Week in Health & Performance: What the Latest Research Says

❄️ Cold Plunging & Seed Oils: Cold exposure can actually make seed oils less harmful by boosting 12,13-diHOME, a metabolite that supports cardiovascular health. Aging lowers this compound, but cold plunges increase it, adding another layer of benefit beyond the mental toughness factor (read more).

Calories & Fat Loss: Whether you eat low-carb, low-fat, or somewhere in between, what matters most for fat loss is total calories and, to some degree, time-restricted eating—mainly because it helps reduce overall intake (read the study).

Protein Frequency: An 8-week trial found no difference in muscle or strength gains when protein was split into 3 meals vs. 5 meals per day, so long as daily protein and calories were the same. Bottom line: don’t stress about micromanaging protein timing; just hit your daily target with high-quality sources (full study here).

Fasting vs. Calorie Cutting: A systematic review shows that intermittent fasting or calorie restriction, combined with exercise, leads to more fat loss than exercise alone; however, both approaches risk muscle loss without resistance training. Translation: fasting + cardio without lifting = a fast track to weakness, not strength (study here).

Key Takeaway: Cold plunges may protect your heart in surprising ways, fat loss comes down to calories, protein frequency matters less than total intake, and if you’re restricting calories or fasting, make sure you lift weights to hang onto muscle.
